Bills in Limbo

Nearly fifty bills are currently backlogged waiting for a hearing in Colorado’s house appropriations committee by the end of this week. Many of those bills have been in limbo for weeks, and most are expected to get defeated because of the huge budget deficit facing the state. Bente Birkeland reports from Denver.

Cyclist Bill Rolls to Governor

A measure that aims to make it safer for bicyclists to travel on Colorado highways has now cleared both legislative chambers. It passed the house on Monday with bi-partisan support, but not without some controversy. It next heads to the Governor’s desk. Bente Birkeland reports from Denver.

Colorado's Race to the Top

Colorado senators unveiled a plan on Monday to try and win federal dollars for education reform. If successful they say the state could see an additional 1 billion dollars in aid. Bente Birkeland reports from Denver.

State Lawmakers Try to Block Pinon Canyon Expansion

Some state lawmakers are trying a new tactic in their efforts to block the Army’s plans to expand its 235,000- acre Pinon Canyon training site by introducing a bill that would bar the sale of state lands for the expansion. The bill’s House sponsors came together in Pueblo yesterday to talk about the effort. KRCC’s Eryn Gable was there and has this report.

The Almost Snow Ball Fight

The state legislature took a snow day on Thursday afternoon and Friday, giving lawmakers time to travel home in blizzard like conditions. But for a few legislators the snow was cause for some fun Bente Birkeland reports from Denver.

Budget Preview

Colorado Central Changes Hands

Denver Post columnist Ed Quillen and his wife Martha founded Colorado Central magazine fifteen years ago. Since then the quirky newsprint publication has covered everything from the arts to water rights-as long as it was about central Colorado. Just last month they sold the magazine. March was the first issue with Mike Rosso, the new owner, at the helm. KRCC’s Shanna Lewis has this retrospect and look forward.

Health Care Proposals

The Hospital Affordability Act passed out of the Colorado House yesterday; it now heads to the senate. The measure aims to gives an additional 100 thousand people in Colorado health insurance by leveraging more federal dollars for Medicaid. But it’s not the only major healthcare proposal in the works this session. Bente Birkeland looks at two other bills that could see a rigorous debate.
