Child Welfare Bill Introduced

Lawmakers introduced a bill yesterday that aims to make it easier to file complaints against the state’s child welfare system, which cares for abused and neglected children. A task force studied the issue following the deaths of 13 children within the system in one year. Bente Birkeland reports from Denver.

Round-Up: Veteran Trauma Court Opens, Otero County Seeks Grant for Meteorological Station, and more

A Veteran Trauma Court is officially opening today in Colorado Springs to help veterans who may be suffering from post traumatic stress disorder or other war injuries…Otero County officials have taken the first steps toward finding out if they can develop a renewable energy industry in the region…and, the House Finance Committee yesterday killed a bill that would have allowed Colorado convenience stores to sell full-strength beer.

Ethics Investigation Changes

Unaffiliated Candidates

The state legislature’s only unaffiliated representative is mounting an effort to make it easier for other independent candidates to get on the ballot by sponsoring a bill to change the filing requirement. The measure recently cleared a house committee unanimously and is expected to be debated on the full floor later this week. Bente Birkeland has more from the state house.

In Colorado Springs, city council had a number of issues on which to vote, including issue 300 (Gazette, KOAA) which passed, a proposed medical marijuana ordinance, which failed (Gazette ,KRDO, KXRM), and a no-camping ordinance, which passed (Gazette, KRDO). KRDO also reports that D-11 has decided to join with other school districts in suing the state.

In Pueblo, the Chieftain reports on the new weapons ban on Colorado State University campuses.

The Canon City Daily Record reports on the area’s school district meeting, and their approval of a ‘retirement incentive plan.’

Colorado Springs' New Camping Ordinance and the Homeless

Several hundred people who’ve been living in Colorado Springs’ parks will soon have to find a new address. That’s after, as the Gazette reports, the city council officially passed an ordinance yesterday to ban camping on city property. The city’s charities and police department have worked for months to get ready for the change. KCFR‘s Megan Verlee has this report on their efforts.
