Medano and Parkdale Canyon Fire Updates

The Medano Fire continues to burn in and around the Great Sand Dunes National Park about 25 miles northeast of Alamosa.Now a second major fire is burning in southcentral Colorado. Yesterday afternoon a blaze erupted about 14 miles east of Canon City causing evacuations of homes and businesses in the area. KRCC’s Shanna Lewis filed this report on the two fires.

Economic Outlook for Colorado

Colorado’s economy is recovering but is still lagging behind the rest of the nation, according to the state’s latest economic forecast. The non-partisan legislative council released the report yesterday and says slow growth is expected over the next several years. Bente Birkeland has more from the state capitol.

Evacuations Ordered in Freemont County Fire

Officials in Fremont County have ordered an evacuation as a result of a new fire burning there. The Parkdale Canyon Fire was reported around 2:00 this afternoon on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands in the Arkansas River Corridor southeast of Parkdale. As of 6:00 this evening the following areas are under evacuation:

County Road 61
The Royal Gorge Park
Buckskin Joe
all businesses along County Road 3A and 8 Mile Hill
all businesses and residents in the area along Highway 9 going north up to mile marker 5 from Highway 50
all businesses, residents, and campgrounds along Highway 50 from the junction of Highway 9 to Parkdale.

Officials estimate the fire to be between 650-700 acres.

As of  10:00, officials estimate the fire at about 700 acres. The fire has destroyed several structures, but it’s not confirmed as to how many have been destroyed, or what they were.

Round-Up: State Budget Forecast, and the Medano Fire Update

State budget forecasters told lawmakers today that there are insufficient funds to pay the bills for this fiscal year and the new fiscal year beginning July 1…and, earlier today fire officials reported that the Medano Fire has burned over 4700 acres in Saguache and Huerfano counties, about 25 miles northeast of Alamosa.

Medano Fire Update

The Medano Fire burning near the Great Sand Dunes National Park has spread to some 5,000 acres as of earlier today. Shanna Lewis filed this report from Westcliffe.

The Colorado Attorney General’s Office said it will file court papers today seeking a contempt-of-court citation against Colorado Springs anti-tax activist Doug Bruce (Gazette).

Governor Bill Ritter recently signed a House Bill that will help low-income families get through the recession by expanding access to food and nutrition programs (Tribune Democrat).

The Las Animas County Board of Commissioners approved Tuesday a series of expenditure cuts in the county’s 2010 general fund budget (Trinidad Times).

Medano Fire Sends Smoke through Region

Last night a huge cloud of smoke drifted across Huerfano and Pueblo counties. The smoke is from a wildfire burning in the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve northeast of Alamosa. Shanna Lewis sent us this report from Westcliffe.
