Secretary of State Race

The two candidates running for Secretary of State are touting their business credentials and pledging to make elections more transparent. Democrat Bernie Buescher was appointed to the position about a year and a half ago. He faces Republican challenger Scott Gessler, who is an election attorney. Bente Birkeland has more from the state capitol.

Race for State Treasurer

Democratic state treasurer Cary Kennedy is highlighting her efforts to help the state grapple with deep budget cuts in her re-election bid. Kennedy recently debated her Republican challenger Walker Stapleton in Colorado Springs. He’s advocating limited government and transparency, and says Colorado has an addiction to spending. Bente Birkeland has more from state capitol.

Governor’s Debate in Colorado Springs

A debate over the weekend brought some fresh topics to the Governor’s race as attendees presented their questions. Three of the candidates for Governor debated in Colorado Springs on Saturday. Action 22, a southern Colorado advocacy group sponsored the forum which drew several hundred people. Bente Birkeland has more from Colorado Springs.

Personhood Amendment Overview

Voters will see nine questions on the ballot this fall, including the controversial personhood amendment, which is back before voters for a second time. Amendment 62 would define personhood from the beginning of biological development. And as Bente Birkeland reports, the arguments for and against it fall along familiar lines touching on everything from abortion rights to contraception.

‘Land Link’ Connects Farmers with Property Owners

At a time when becoming a farmer often means a large initial investment, or when generational farms seem to reach near the end of the line…or when landowners simply might not have the time, experience, or desire to ranch or farm their property, there’s a new program that seeks to pair next generation farmers with land owners. KRCC’s Shanna Lewis visited Chaffee County, and has this report on Land Link, which seeks to give farmers access to land they otherwise couldn’t afford.

Debates Generate Debate

The debate over political debates, who can participate and who can’t, is a theme every election cycle. But debate organizers say the political wrangling this year has become even more heated and at times downright bizarre. Bente Birkeland has more from the state capitol.

Round-Up: Campaign spending, Drop in child seat usage

A watchdog group that tracks campaign spending says Colorado’s Senate contest ranks second in elections attracting outside spending this year…and, the number of infants and children in proper car seats has declined in Colorado, according to a study released late last week by the state Department of Transportation.
