Colorado GOP Chair Decides Not to Run for 3rd Term

Colorado Republicans will have a new state party leader after chair Dick Wadhams unexpectedly dropped out of the running for a third term. Bente Birkeland examines the impact of his decision and what it means for Republicans across the state.

Capitol Conversation: Slow Start to the Session

Colorado is almost one month into the legislative session and despite some occasional flare-ups over minor measures, lawmakers have gotten off to a relatively slow start. For now, leadership in the split legislature seems to be taking a more cautious approach to the session. Bente Birkeland analyzes the dynamic as part of our capitol conversation series.

Round-Up: Sub-zero temperatures tax energy; UCCS students relocate; and, Tipton heads to statehouse

With temperatures still hovering around the zero degree mark, energy companies in the region are clearly experiencing in a spike in natural gas consumption…According to a release from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, nearly 50 students at the college are relocating from the UCCS Housing Village to new rooms due to a break in water lines that serve fire sprinklers…Republican Representative Scott Tipton paid a visit to his former colleagues in the Colorado legislature today.

Lawmaker Apologizes

A Republican House member publicly apologized today for getting heated and talking loudly to a Democratic lawmaker on the senate floor last week. A sergeant-at-arms asked him to leave the chamber and he’s since been banned from the senate floor for the rest of the legislative session. Bente Birkeland has more from the state capitol.

Hickenlooper Delivers First State of the State

Governor John Hickenlooper got a bi-partisan round of applause and one standing ovation yesterday when he delivered his first state of the state address to a joint session of the legislature. Legislative Session Begins

Thirty-one new state lawmakers took the oath of office yesterday. Much of the attention was focused on the House of Representatives which switched to Republican control for the first time in six years. Democrats remain in control of the state Senate. And while lawmakers stressed the importance of bi-partisanship, for some Democrats the session started off on a sour note. Bente Birkeland has more from the state capitol.
