Round-Up: Fuel tanks found, BLM to open public comments on “Over the River,” and more

A search team has found two empty fuel tanks that were jettisoned from an F-16 jet fighter during an in-flight emergency over Colorado…The Bureau of Land Management is looking to open a public comment period on artist Christo’s proposed “Over the River” project…and, federal scientists say an exotic fungus spreading through Rocky Mountain forests is threatening Colorado’s oldest trees.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Debate

The two Republican candidates running for El Paso County Sheriff came together last night for a debate about issues facing the department. KRCC was a media sponsor of the event. Knox Graham was there, and has this report.

Round-Up: Primary ballots go out, otters rebound

Ballots for the August primary election start going in the mail today to voters affiliated with major political parties…and, river otters are thriving in Colorado, and state wildlife officials say they’re considering lifting protections because the species is doing so well.

Round-Up: Pueblo to Decide MMJ Ballot Questions, El Paso County Sheriff’s New Youtube Channel, and more

Pueblo City Council is expected to decide tonight on whether to put the issue of medical marijuana dispensaries up to voters. The Chieftain reports that in addition, the council is also expected to decide whether or not to ask for sales tax for medical marijuana and paraphernalia…The El Paso County Sheriff’s office now has its own YouTube channel…and, seven former presidents of Latin American countries spent some time in Denver today taking part in a round-table discussion.

Round-Up: EPA Holds Meeting about Hydraulic Fracturing, and more

The bomb squad was called in this morning to the Colorado Springs police department after a box of blasting caps was dropped off at the Nevada Avenue location. KKTV reports the situation as secure as of late morning, and the Gazette reports the explosives posed no danger to the building…Colorado residents worried about hydraulic fracturing in the state have the chance to voice their concerns…and, Colorado Democratic Senator Mark Udall says he supports Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan.

Round-Up: Medano Fire Update, GOP Chair Heads to CO, and more

The Medano Fire in the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve has been burning for over a month…Republican Party Chair Michael Steele is heading to Colorado afterall. The announcement comes one day after pulling out of the Aspen Ideas Festival, where he was supposed to appear today…and, US Labor Secretary Hilda Solis is in Denver to discuss how women are influencing the economy during a forum with other world figures. Tomorrow, Solis is expected to visit Pueblo Community College.

Round-Up: Area Schools Make Newsweek’s Annual List; Peterson AFB Repairs Roof; Hiker Dies

Five schools in the Colorado Springs area have made Newsweek‘s annual America’s Best High Schools list…Peterson Air Force Base is repairing the roof of a damaged hangar that was torn by high winds last month…and, a hiker has died while trying to climb a 14,000-foot mountain in southern Colorado near Alamosa.

Round-Up: Marchers in Denver Rally for Immigration Reform; Colorado Springs’ Mayoral Race; and more

About 100 people are marching from the Colorado state capitol to the federal courts in downtown Denver to call for changes in the country’s immigration laws…Dave Munger, a retired small businessman in Colorado Springs, and the current president of the Council of Neighbors and Organizations, says he’s entering the race for mayor, according to the Gazette and the Business Journal…and, the Boulder County town of Superior is the first to ban medical marijuana dispensaries.
