Touring the Vestas Tower Factory in Pueblo

Wind tower manufacturing giant Vestas opened a new factory south of Pueblo earlier this year. Two accidents, one of them fatal, marked its first six months of operations, along with the announcement that the international company was laying off some 3000 workers in Europe. Nonetheless, Vestas created some 450 jobs in the Pueblo area, and the company’s total workforce at all of its Colorado facilities totals about 1600. KRCC’s Shanna Lewis has this look at the Pueblo factory.

‘Land Link’ Connects Farmers with Property Owners

At a time when becoming a farmer often means a large initial investment, or when generational farms seem to reach near the end of the line…or when landowners simply might not have the time, experience, or desire to ranch or farm their property, there’s a new program that seeks to pair next generation farmers with land owners. KRCC’s Shanna Lewis visited Chaffee County, and has this report on Land Link, which seeks to give farmers access to land they otherwise couldn’t afford.

We’ve received an update on the Parkdale Canyon Fire since Shanna completed this report. Officials say weather conditions in the area were favorable today and fire crews made progress. Evacuations are still in place for the Royal View Campground and all areas west of County Road 61 and south of Highway 50 to the Arkansas River. Residents and businesses west of Highway 9 and north of Highway 50 are no longer on a “soft evacuation” notice, and residents east of County Road 61 can return to their homes and businesses. The Arkansas River will reopen to boaters tomorrow.

Medano Fire Spreads Smoke Throughout the Region

Reports of visible smoke in Pueblo and Westcliffe likely originate from a fire burning at the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Southeastern Colorado. Officials there say a fire sparked by lightening earlier this month flared back up, but is not a threat to park visitors or resources, and is being managed.
