Art & Music From the Penny Arcade: A Digital Song Making Contest

We love the Penny Arcade in Manitou Springs. Who doesn’t? In particular, we’re smitten with the stencil art on the sides of the pin-ball machines and video games. But we also love the sounds. As such, we thought it would be fun to record a bunch of the sounds of the arcade and run them alongside a slideshow of the stencil art. But after we recorded a bunch of the sounds of the arcade and listened to all of it, we thought it might be even more fun to make a song out of the sounds. Then we thought what would be even more fun is if we could upload all the audio we recorded to the website here and ask YOU to make songs with us and, who knows, maybe we’ll get a little record out of it that we could make available for free right here on ye olde intermess.

So, just to prove that it’s possible, we made a song. You can listen to it while you watch the slideshow. In any case, we set the bar kind of low so we’re hoping you’ll take the downloadable audio below and make something far better. We’re going to give you one month (until August 1) and the only rule is that all the music in your song has to come from the over 40 minutes of audio we posted below and be no longer than 4 minutes long. But feel free to add vocals. When you’re done, send us an mp3 of your song to thebigsomething@krcc.org and we’ll play the best 12 of them on the air and make them available for download.

If you’ve never used an audio mixing/editing program, Garage Band on Apple is really easy and you can also get Audacity for free HERE. There are lots of others, too, if you search “free audio software” in Google.

Have fun and we’ll look forward to hearing your songs!
