A Few of Matt Mayberry’s Favorite Things, Part 1

As you may have already heard, the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, among many cultural and other services, is slated to be shut down under next year’s extremely lean city budget. Here’s the big cultural picture as it’s clearly spelled out in the budget:

Budget Cut Capture

One of our favorite things about The Big Something has been the opportunity to open windows onto our local history through audio slideshows with expert narration by staff members of the museum. In light of the budget cuts, we thought we’d ask Matt Mayberry, Director of the Pioneers Museum, to talk about some of HIS favorite things from the Pioneers Museum collection and what they mean to him and to our community.

Part 1 features objects from the collection and Part 2, which will run on Thursday of this week, features documents.

Many thanks to photographer Michael Myers who volunteered to document all the objects. You can see more of his work at michaelmyers.com.

  2. Is that death mask Stratton or Womack? Looks like Bob Womack to me.

  3. Thanks, Matt. I love the Pioneer Museum and cannot imagine Colorado Springs without it. The community worked so hard to save the beautiful building–let’s hope the community will work just as hard to save what the Museum holds!

  5. Matt,
Did the Native Americans actually tie their shoes with the same knot I use today. The impression I had was that the way I tie my shoe laces is sort of a European way .

  6. Is there any petition or something going around to change the decision on the shut-downs? I’ve lived here almost 20 years, and the idea that they’re going to shutdown the Pioneer’s Museum, Rockledge and the GoG Visitor’s Center is just nuts.

  8. Matt and KRCC: Thank you so much for these videos that preserve some of the fascinating history of Colorado Springs. We have such cultural treasures in the Pioneer’s Museum, Rockledge Ranch, Garden of the Gods, our amazing parks. I would love to see artists of all kinds get together for a fund-raiser to keep these services alive and well in the city. Denver does so well with the SCFD supporting their cultural opportunities and making them available to all. Our history and arts are worth preservation, thanks to all who do this work.
