The City of Colorado Springs is in the process of turning off 1/3 of all streetlights to save 1.2 million dollars. Is it necessarily a bad thing?

I can’t believe the opinion by the public & police alike that more lights mean less crime, it just means a criminal doesn’t have to carry a flashlight to see what he’s doing. Shield the lights, point them down and put them just where they are necessary and consider motion sensors when a light is rarely
used but needed.

The police and public officials need to give the impression that they are doing what is necessary to protect the public. Study after study shows that more street lights, brighter street lights do not reduce crime…it only illuminates the area and makes it easier for criminals, wastes energy and destroys the night sky. Yes, fully shielded street lights, minimal wattage, and put them only where they are necessary..and, for God’s sake, turn them off at night in areas where there is little pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
